Amarillo, Texas – Texans spending the holiday weekend outdoors should prepare for intense heat and scattered storms, as temperatures soar into the upper 90s across the Panhandle through Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, daily highs between 90°F and 99°F will be accompanied by humid conditions that could push heat indices up to 105°F. While impact levels remain low, isolated thunderstorms are expected each afternoon and evening, bringing brief downpours, lightning, and gusty winds.

Thursday and Sunday carry the highest storm chances at 30%, while Friday and Saturday drop slightly to 20%. Independence Day festivities may dodge the worst weather, but those in eastern areas should stay alert for any storm development. Cities including Amarillo, Borger, and Hereford should expect peak heating between 3 and 6 p.m., with storms forming rapidly if moisture lingers.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat, and monitor local alerts. Storms could disrupt fireworks or evening travel, especially in rural areas with limited shelter options.

Daily storm chances and extreme heat will persist through Monday, with updates from NWS Amarillo expected each morning.
