Fairbanks, AK – Drivers in northern Alaska should prepare for hazardous travel conditions as a winter weather advisory takes effect Thursday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
The advisory covers the White Mountains and the Chatanika River Valley, including the Steese Highway, Elliott Highway, and Dalton Highway up to mile 38. Snowfall is expected to begin Thursday afternoon, with totals ranging between 4 and 9 inches by Friday night. Higher elevations could see even greater accumulations.
According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snowfall will arrive with a stronger storm system Thursday night into Friday morning. The advisory remains in effect from 2 p.m. Thursday until 10 p.m. Friday.
Travelers on the Steese Highway (mile markers 12–124) and Elliott Highway (mile markers 1–134) should expect slippery and snow-covered roadways, particularly on summits such as Eagle Summit and Twelvemile Summit. Commuters Thursday evening and Friday morning may face difficult driving conditions.
Officials urge drivers to slow down and use caution, noting that icy surfaces on roads, sidewalks, and driveways could increase the risk of accidents and falls. For the latest conditions, residents are encouraged to call 511 before traveling.
