King Salmon, Alaska – A light glaze of ice is coating roads across Bristol Bay and the northern Alaska Peninsula tonight, creating slick travel conditions before temperatures drop and snow takes over by early Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Anchorage, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 3 a.m. Tuesday for the Bristol Bay Borough, including Naknek and King Salmon, as well as Lake Iliamna, Nondalton, Kokhanok, Port Alsworth, Egegik and Pilot Point. Mixed precipitation will continue overnight, with freezing rain adding a light ice accumulation before colder northerly winds flip the system to all snow.
Untreated roads, airport runways and boardwalks may turn icy in short order, especially in King Salmon and along rural routes near Iliamna and Naknek. Even a thin glaze can create hazardous footing and braking issues for vehicles.
Drivers should reduce speed and use extra caution on bridges and exposed roadways. Conditions are expected to improve after 3 a.m. Tuesday as precipitation transitions to snow and colder air settles into the region, though slick spots may linger into the early morning hours.
