Juneau, Alaska – Snow will thicken across Southeast Alaska by daybreak Tuesday, with up to 6 inches expected before 6 p.m., slowing both the morning and evening commutes in Juneau, Gustavus and Petersburg.
According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday for the City and Borough of Juneau and Glacier Bay, including Gustavus. Petersburg Borough is under an advisory from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday. Forecasters expect 3 to 6 inches in Juneau and Gustavus, with 3 to 5 inches in Petersburg. The heaviest snowfall is likely during the middle of the day.
Roads such as Egan Drive in Juneau and Nordic Drive in Petersburg may become snow-covered quickly as steady bands move inland. Snow could mix with rain late Tuesday afternoon, leading to slushy conditions and heavier, wet accumulations on trees and power lines.
Drivers should reduce speed and allow extra stopping distance. Residents are urged to clear storm drains and secure property before snowfall intensifies. Conditions should gradually improve Tuesday evening, though slick spots may persist overnight as temperatures hover near freezing.
