Anchorage, AK – A stunning northern lights display is expected across parts of the northern United States this weekend, with the best viewing opportunities on Saturday and an even stronger light show anticipated on Sunday.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Saturday night’s aurora forecast carries a Kp index of 4, indicating moderate visibility. The lights could be visible across at least 10 states, including Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Washington, Idaho, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Maine.
Sunday’s Kp index is projected to increase to 5, expanding the aurora’s reach into three additional states. NOAA also warns of a 30% chance of radio blackouts due to geomagnetic activity.
The best viewing times are between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time. To maximize visibility, NOAA recommends heading to a dark area away from city lights and seeking higher ground. With clear skies, residents across these northern states may enjoy a rare and vibrant aurora display.
