Ketchikan, Alaska – Temperatures could climb as high as 80°F in parts of Southeast Alaska on Monday, sparking concerns about heat-related illnesses. A Heat Advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. AKDT for Prince of Wales Island, Ketchikan Gateway Borough, and the City of Hyder, including areas like Craig, Klawock, Hydaburg, and Ketchikan.

According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, inland regions, particularly those away from the cooling effects of sea breezes, will experience the warmest temperatures. While these highs may not seem extreme compared to the Lower 48, they are notably higher than usual for the region, where cooler weather is more typical.

Local officials are urging residents to take precautions during the heat, such as drinking plenty of fluids and checking on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly and children. Those planning outdoor activities are advised to avoid strenuous exercise during peak heat and wear loose, breathable clothing.

To stay cool, people are encouraged to use fans, close curtains during the day to block direct sunlight, and take advantage of community buildings with air conditioning when possible. If you or someone else begins to show signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, immediate action is required.

The advisory is set to expire at 8 p.m. Monday evening, though additional advisories or warnings could be issued if conditions change.
