Alaska Earthquake: Magnitude 6.5 Rattles Near Atka Village, No Tsunami Threat Reported

Atka, AK – A preliminary magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck approximately 160 miles southwest of Atka Village on Sunday. The tremor, recorded at 11:57 a.m. PST, was centered in the Aleutian Islands region.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake’s depth was measured at 33 kilometers (20.5 miles). Despite its strength, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed there is no tsunami threat to the U.S. West Coast or Alaska.

Residents in Atka and nearby areas reported feeling the tremors. However, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or significant damage. Authorities are monitoring the situation and urging residents to remain vigilant for aftershocks.

Earthquakes are common in Alaska, located along the seismically active “Ring of Fire.” Experts remind residents to review safety plans and secure heavy furniture to prevent injuries during future events.
