Gainesville, FL – A routine drive in northwest Alachua County turned into an unusual crime Monday afternoon after deputies say a woman allegedly stole a man’s truck moments after he stopped to check on her along the roadside.
According to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began on Monday, November 24, 2025, when deputies responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in the 13000 block of NW CR-231. The victim told dispatch that his 1997 GMC Sierra was taken by a woman later identified as 42-year-old Melinda Waters.
Deputies met with the victim, who said he and other drivers saw Waters lying in a ditch while traveling southbound on CR-231. Believing she may need help, the victim stopped and approached her to ask if she needed assistance or if he should call 911.
Sheriff’s officials said Waters allegedly stood up, approached the victim’s truck, got into the driver’s seat, and drove away without permission. The victim provided deputies with a description of both Waters and the vehicle, including its license plate.
A BOLO was quickly issued as deputies canvassed nearby areas. DS Pillar later spotted the stolen truck traveling northbound on NW 34th Boulevard, just south of US 441. Before deputies executed a high-risk traffic stop, the vehicle came to a stop on its own at 2800 NW 74th Place.
Authorities say Waters exited the truck and matched the description given by the victim. She was detained without further incident.
Waters was arrested and charged with Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle.
