Huntsville, Ala. – The air already feels thick across north Alabama, and patches of early fog have faded into a warm, humid morning. By this afternoon, towering clouds could build quickly, bringing scattered thunderstorms just as the heat reaches uncomfortable levels.
Summer weather is shifting into a more active pattern across the Tennessee Valley. While much of the morning remains dry, residents should prepare for changing conditions later today as heat and scattered thunderstorms develop.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, there is a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms between early afternoon and late afternoon. Before storms arrive, temperatures will climb to around 92 degrees, with heat index values reaching as high as 105 degrees. Brief downpours, lightning and locally gusty winds are possible with any stronger storm, although widespread severe weather is not expected.
The unsettled pattern continues into Sunday. Storm chances increase to 60% during the afternoon as highs reach 93 degrees and heat index values again approach 105 degrees. Drivers on Interstate 565, U.S. 72 and Memorial Parkway should be prepared for sudden reductions in visibility if heavier rain develops during the afternoon commute or weekend travel.
By Monday, the weather becomes a little quieter with only a 40% chance of afternoon storms and highs near 93 degrees. Tuesday turns hotter and drier, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures climbing to 95 degrees before isolated storm chances return Tuesday night.
Keep outdoor activities flexible through the afternoon and have a way to receive weather alerts if you’re spending time outside. Lightning can develop quickly even when storms appear isolated.
Longer-range outlooks suggest temperatures may remain above normal into late next week across much of Alabama, keeping the summer heat firmly in place.
