Birmingham, AL – An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for several Alabama counties, effective from midnight Sunday to 11 a.m. Monday. Dangerously low wind chills, ranging from 0 to 5 degrees, are expected to impact daily life.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, the warning covers Jefferson, Shelby, Talladega, Blount, and surrounding counties, including major cities like Birmingham, Hoover, and Gadsden. Prolonged exposure to the cold could result in frostbite or hypothermia.

Residents are advised to take precautions, including dressing in layers, using face masks and gloves, and limiting time outdoors. Additionally, to prevent pipes from freezing, allow faucets to drip and wrap exposed plumbing. Portable heaters should be used with caution to avoid fire risks, and generators should never be operated indoors.

The extreme cold is expected to subside by late Monday morning, but subfreezing temperatures overnight could still cause hazards. Residents are urged to check on elderly neighbors and ensure pets are kept indoors.

For the latest updates, monitor weather alerts and follow NWS Birmingham’s guidance.
