Birmingham, AL – An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for central Alabama, including Birmingham, with dangerously low temperatures expected from midnight Sunday through 11 a.m. Monday.

The National Weather Service reports wind chills as low as 0°F to 5°F for Jefferson County and surrounding areas, including Blount, St. Clair, and Calhoun counties. Frostbite and hypothermia are likely if precautions are not taken, and prolonged subfreezing temperatures could lead to burst pipes.

Monday morning temperatures are forecast to drop into the teens, with highs only reaching the low 30s. Gusty north winds up to 25 mph will make conditions feel even colder.

Residents are urged to dress in layers, covering exposed skin, and to check on vulnerable neighbors and pets. Pipes should be insulated, and faucets allowed to drip to prevent freezing.

The cold spell is expected to ease by midweek, with temperatures climbing into the 40s by Wednesday. Officials warn, however, that travel and outdoor activities remain hazardous until the warning expires Monday.
