Montgomery, AL – A sharp overnight temperature drop to 35°F will trigger frost formation across central and eastern Alabama by 1 a.m. Thursday, putting gardens and sensitive vegetation at risk before the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a Frost Advisory remains in effect from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. CDT Thursday for 19 counties, including Montgomery, Lee, Calhoun, Talladega, and Etowah. Clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to fall quickly, creating ideal conditions for widespread frost development.

Cities such as Gadsden, Anniston, Auburn, and Troy will see the coldest conditions just before sunrise, with exposed surfaces cooling rapidly. In Montgomery and surrounding areas like Wetumpka and Prattville, residents may notice frost on vehicles, rooftops, and grassy areas during the early morning hours.

Agricultural impacts are the primary concern. Tender plants, early spring blooms, and unprotected gardens could suffer damage or be killed if left uncovered. Residents are urged to bring potted plants indoors or use cloth coverings to trap heat near vegetation.

Conditions improve quickly after 8 a.m. as sunlight returns, but additional advisories could be issued if similar overnight cooling develops again later this week.
