Huntsville, Alabama – Drivers across north Alabama could encounter heavy downpours, reduced visibility and water-covered roads through this evening as numerous thunderstorms develop across the Tennessee Valley. Areas south and east of Interstate 65 face the greatest concern for localized flooding, especially where storms repeatedly move over the same locations.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, rain and thunderstorm chances will remain between 30% and 70% through the afternoon and evening. Forecasters continue to highlight a low to medium risk of flooding from slow-moving storms, with the highest flood potential focused just south and east of the I-65 corridor based on recent rainfall trends.
Communities including Huntsville, Decatur, Scottsboro, Fort Payne, Guntersville and surrounding areas should be prepared for periods of heavy rainfall, frequent lightning and gusty, erratic winds. While widespread severe weather is not expected, stronger thunderstorms could produce brief wind gusts capable of downing small tree limbs and creating hazardous travel conditions.
Motorists should never drive through flooded roadways, as water depth can be difficult to judge. If thunder is heard, move indoors immediately and postpone outdoor activities until storms pass. Residents should also secure loose outdoor items that could be blown around by sudden wind gusts.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue through the evening before gradually diminishing overnight. Additional weather statements or localized flood advisories may be issued if heavier storms become more persistent.
