Alabama Severe Weather Alert: Damaging Winds and Hail Possible from 1–11 p.m. Saturday

Birmingham, Ala. – Severe thunderstorms could sweep across central Alabama between 1 and 11 p.m. Saturday, bringing damaging winds and large hail to much of the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a Level 2 out of 5 severe storm risk covers cities including Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, and Demopolis, with a Level 1 risk extending to Montgomery and Anniston. Wind gusts may reach 60 mph and hail could be as large as a quarter. The agency warns that frequent lightning and heavy downpours may accompany these storms.

The highest threat zone runs from Fayette and Jasper southeast toward Selma and Clanton. Motorists traveling along I-20, I-59, and US-82 should use extra caution during peak storm hours. Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, charge devices, and have multiple alert methods ready.

With uncertainty around the storm structure, isolated severe activity could intensify rapidly. Know where your nearest sturdy shelter is, and check for updates throughout the afternoon.

Storm watches remain in effect through Saturday evening, and additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
