Baton Rouge, LA – Hurricane Francine made landfall as a Category 2 storm at 5 p.m. Wednesday, bringing 100 mph winds to the southern Louisiana coast. As the storm progresses inland, a tornado watch remains in effect until 11 p.m. for parts of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), conditions are highly favorable for several tornadoes to form across the region. The watch covers areas along and 70 miles north and south of a line extending from Houma, LA, to Gulfport, MS, with a continued threat into southern Alabama.
The NWS warns that the tornado threat will increase through the late afternoon and evening as Francine moves northeastward. Residents in the affected areas should remain vigilant and prepared to seek shelter if tornado warnings are issued.
Severe thunderstorms are also likely, adding to the storm’s dangerous conditions. Local authorities advise the public to stay updated on weather alerts and take necessary safety precautions.
