Alabama’s Gulf Coast residents should prepare for potential high surf, strong winds, and minor coastal flooding as Hurricane Rafael enters the Gulf of Mexico later this week. Although a direct hit on Alabama isn’t expected, the storm’s proximity could still bring hazardous beach conditions to areas like Gulf Shores and Orange Beach by Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Mobile, Rafael is forecast to strengthen after passing over Cuba on Wednesday, with impacts on Gulf waters anticipated by the weekend. Alabama’s coastline could experience rough surf, dangerous rip currents, and elevated tides, posing risks for beachgoers and boaters. Wind gusts may also pick up in coastal areas, potentially affecting outdoor events and travel.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, avoid swimming or boating in rough waters, and monitor updates closely. Officials urge caution for anyone traveling along coastal highways, as the storm’s impacts could cause brief flooding or delays.
