Riverside, MO – A 35-year-old motorcyclist has died following a crash involving a commercial truck in Platte County this morning, prompting an ongoing investigation into the cause.

According to the Platte County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 22, on NW Mattox Road just north of NW 43rd Street in Riverside, located within the Kansas City metro area. Riverside Police initially responded before the sheriff’s office took over the investigation due to the severity of injuries and the involvement of a commercial vehicle.

Authorities said the crash involved a 2024 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by Michael Wolcott of Riverside and a 2022 International truck tractor operated by a 33-year-old man from Lucas, Iowa.

Preliminary findings indicate Wolcott was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed and attempted to pass the truck as it began turning left into a local business. The motorcycle struck the truck’s front brush guard before leaving the roadway and hitting a utility pole.

Wolcott was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The truck driver was not injured and was released at the scene.

Investigators say the crash remains under review by the Platte County Sheriff’s Office Crash Team. Speed and improper passing are believed to be contributing factors.

No additional details have been released as the investigation continues.
