Grand Forks, ND – A widespread freeze warning is in effect across parts of the Upper Midwest and Northern Plains tonight into Sunday morning, with forecasters warning of sub-freezing temperatures that could impact crops and sensitive vegetation.

According to the National Weather Service, the freeze warning covers large portions of North Dakota, northern Minnesota, and parts of northern Michigan, beginning late Saturday night, May 9, and continuing into early Sunday, May 10.

Temperatures are expected to drop as low as 26 to 32 degrees overnight, with the coldest readings likely in central and western North Dakota and parts of northern Minnesota.

In Michigan, similar conditions are expected, with lows near or below freezing and an additional freeze watch in place Sunday night into Monday morning for parts of the northern Lower Peninsula.

Forecasters warn that frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, damage gardens, and harm other sensitive vegetation. Unprotected outdoor plumbing may also be at risk in colder pockets.

Residents are urged to take precautions, including covering plants, bringing potted vegetation indoors, and ensuring outdoor water systems are protected.

The freeze threat comes as many areas have already begun their growing season, increasing the risk of agricultural impacts across the region.

Conditions are expected to improve after sunrise Sunday as temperatures gradually warm.
