Gray, ME – A dangerous stretch of heat and humidity is set to grip much of Maine and New Hampshire beginning Wednesday, with forecasters warning that heat index values could exceed 100 degrees in many communities through the Fourth of July holiday period.
According to the National Weather Service office in Gray, hot and very humid conditions will develop Wednesday, July 1, and continue into the weekend, with the hottest weather expected Thursday and Friday.
Forecasters say afternoon high temperatures will climb into the 90s, with some locations potentially reaching 100 degrees, challenging or breaking daily temperature records. Combined with high humidity, heat index values are expected to top 100 degrees across much of the region.
The National Weather Service has issued heat headlines for parts of the area and says much of Maine and New Hampshire faces a Major HeatRisk, with isolated areas reaching the Extreme HeatRisk category by Friday. These conditions increase the likelihood of heat-related illnesses, especially for older adults, young children, outdoor workers, and people without access to air conditioning.
Officials urge residents to:
- Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
- Spend time in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Check on elderly neighbors, relatives, and others who may be vulnerable to the heat.
The prolonged heat arrives just as many residents prepare for Independence Day celebrations, increasing the importance of planning outdoor activities carefully.
Forecasters encourage residents to continue monitoring the latest forecasts and heat advisories, as temperatures and heat-related headlines could be updated throughout the week.
