Waucoma, IA – A rural Fayette County roadway was blocked Tuesday afternoon after a crash involving a tractor and a semi left both vehicles totaled, according to local authorities.
According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 1:14 p.m. on May 4, 2026, along X Avenue near White Tail Road, about one mile west of Waucoma in northeast Iowa. Investigators say a 40-year-old Fredericksburg man was driving a green 2002 John Deere 8220 tractor eastbound while hauling a John Deere planter when he attempted to make a left turn onto a gravel road.
At the same time, a 61-year-old Dows man was traveling eastbound in a purple 2018 Kenworth semi hauling a white utility trailer and allegedly attempted to pass multiple farm vehicles. Authorities say the semi collided with the tractor during the maneuver.
The tractor entered the south ditch and was declared a total loss, while the attached planter sustained about $1,500 in damage. After the impact, the semi reportedly crossed the roadway, entered the north ditch, and came to rest in the south ditch with its trailer blocking both lanes.
No injuries were reported by either driver, officials said. However, the crash caused significant disruption to traffic in the rural area as emergency crews responded.
The sheriff’s office confirmed the semi driver was cited for unsafe passing. Assisting agencies included the Waucoma Fire Department, local first responders, Gundersen Ambulance, and Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement.
