Highland, IN – A fireworks display in northwest Indiana was briefly interrupted after an equipment malfunction caused an unexpected low-altitude explosion, though authorities say no injuries were reported.

According to the Highland Police Department, the incident occurred during the community’s fireworks display when a malfunction caused an early detonation inside a launch tube. The force of that blast knocked over a neighboring tube that had been prepared for firing, resulting in a second aerial shell detonating at a low altitude.

Police and Highland Fire Department personnel, who were already assigned to the event, responded immediately and secured the area.

Officials said there are no known injuries associated with the incident.

Based on the information currently available, investigators believe the incident was an isolated equipment failure rather than any intentional act or broader safety issue.

The fireworks display and the equipment involved will be reviewed by event organizers and the fireworks contractor as part of the normal post-event evaluation, according to police.
