Lake County, IN – A routine task turned tragic for an Indiana man in a freak accident that occurred on Monday evening.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Department reports that an 83-year-old resident of unincorporated Crown Point was fatally struck by a vehicle in the 13700 block of Chase Street, moments after collecting his mail. At approximately 5:42 p.m., emergency responders arrived at the scene to find the senior citizen tragically trapped under a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander SUV. Despite immediate efforts, it was soon determined that the victim had succumbed to his injuries.
Preliminary investigation suggests a startling sequence of events: after retrieving his mail, the man was crossing the street back to his home when he inexplicably kneeled or bent over in the roadway. The 42-year-old female driver of the SUV, noticing an obstruction in the road, attempted to brake urgently but was unable to avoid the collision.
Authorities have indicated that neither drugs, alcohol, nor speeding appear to be factors in this accident. The Lake County Sheriff’s Department Crash Reconstruction Unit is actively investigating the circumstances of this unusual and tragic incident
