SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois State Police (ISP) has issued a warning about a new phone scam targeting residents across the state.

According to the ISP, scammers are posing as ISP investigators and falsely claiming victims’ identities have been stolen. Authorities have confirmed that these calls are fraudulent, emphasizing that ISP agents do not solicit personal or financial information over the phone.

Residents are urged to exercise caution if contacted by someone claiming to be an ISP investigator. They should request the caller’s name, badge number, and phone number, then disconnect the call and verify the authenticity through official ISP channels.

The state police also advise anyone who has inadvertently provided sensitive information to a scammer to contact the three major credit bureaus to place a security freeze on their credit, preventing potential fraudulent activities. For further assistance, victims can reach out to the Illinois Attorney General’s Identity Theft Hotline.
