Wheaton, IL – A 17-year-old from Oak Brook is facing felony charges after prosecutors say he caused a high-speed crash that killed a Downers Grove couple earlier this year in DuPage County.
According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the teen, identified as Francesco Rendina, appeared in court Monday, May 11, 2026, where a judge denied a petition to detain him pre-trial. He is charged with two counts of reckless homicide in connection with the March 27 crash.
Authorities say the collision happened around 6:53 p.m. at the intersection of Highland Avenue and 35th Street in Downers Grove. Investigators allege Rendina was driving a 2022 BMW SUV southbound at a high rate of speed, changing lanes recklessly before striking another vehicle.
According to prosecutors, Rendina was allegedly traveling about 104 mph seconds before the crash and 89 mph in a 45 mph zone at the time of impact.
The victims, identified as 72-year-old Ried Jacobsen and his 67-year-old wife Katherine, were struck as they turned onto Highland Avenue. Ried Jacobsen was pronounced dead at the scene, while Katherine Jacobsen later died at a hospital.
As part of his release conditions, Rendina is prohibited from driving and from using alcohol or non-prescribed substances.
His next court appearance is scheduled for June 15, 2026.
Officials stress the charges are allegations, and the case remains pending in court.
