Champaign County, IL Shooting Leaves Man Dead Friday Evening

Champaign, IL – A 33-year-old Champaign man is dead following a reported shooting Friday evening, prompting an active homicide investigation in Champaign County.

According to the Champaign Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 500 block of East Columbia Avenue at approximately 5:22 p.m. on May 1, 2026, Friday, after receiving reports of a shooting with injuries. When officers arrived, they located the victim in a nearby alley suffering from at least one potentially life-threatening gunshot wound.

Police and Champaign Fire Department personnel immediately administered emergency medical aid at the scene before transporting the man to a local hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, the victim later succumbed to his injuries, authorities said.

Investigators are actively canvassing the surrounding neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance footage that may assist in determining what led up to the shooting. According to police, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Officials are asking nearby residents and businesses, particularly those with exterior camera systems, to review their footage and report anything suspicious from the time of the incident.
