Hernando County, Florida – An inmate at the Hernando County Detention Center died early Wednesday morning after being found unresponsive in his cell, prompting an ongoing investigation.
According to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 4:48 a.m. Wednesday, when a detention deputy conducting a routine inmate count discovered a male inmate unresponsive inside his assigned cell. Officials said the inmate was the only person housed in the cell at the time.
Medical staff inside the facility were immediately notified, and deputies along with nursing personnel began performing life-saving measures. Hernando County Fire Rescue arrived shortly after and continued treatment before transporting the inmate to a local hospital.
Authorities said the inmate was later pronounced dead at approximately 5:23 a.m. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Officials confirmed the body has been transferred to the District 5 Medical Examiner’s Office in Leesburg, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
The sheriff’s office said the inmate had been in custody since Tuesday, March 4, 2026, on various drug-related charges.
No additional details have been released at this time as the investigation remains active.
