Pasco County, FL – With hurricane season underway, the Pasco Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents that emergency planning should include every member of the family—including pets.

According to the Pasco Sheriff’s Office, animals rely on their owners to keep them safe before, during, and after severe weather. Officials are encouraging pet owners to prepare now rather than waiting until a storm is approaching.

The sheriff’s office recommends taking several steps to help protect pets during hurricane season, including:

  • Create an evacuation plan that includes pets.
  • Plan for pet sanitation needs while away from home.
  • Stock extra medications and grooming supplies.
  • Ensure pets are microchipped and identification information is current.
  • Purchase extra food and water for pets in case of extended power outages or supply disruptions.

Emergency officials often advise residents to identify pet-friendly shelters, hotels, or boarding facilities before evacuation orders are issued, as many public shelters do not accept animals other than service animals.

Preparing a pet emergency kit with vaccination records, medications, leashes, carriers, food, water, and comfort items can also help families respond more quickly if evacuation becomes necessary.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, with activity typically increasing during the late summer and early fall.

The Pasco Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to review their hurricane preparedness plans now to ensure both people and pets are ready should severe weather threaten Florida this season.
