WATSEKA, IL – The Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department, in collaboration with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), is stepping up efforts to combat prescription drug abuse in the community.
Later today, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the department is hosting a prescription drug take-back event at their location on 550 S. 10th St., Watseka, IL. 60970 (west door), where the public can safely dispose of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.
This initiative is part of the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, which has been in effect since 2010 and has collected nearly 6,350 tons of prescription medications to date. The goal is to prevent pill abuse and theft by eliminating potentially dangerous drugs from homes. Prescription drugs that are left unused or expired can be susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse, leading to accidental poisonings and overdoses.
The event is free and anonymous, with no questions asked. The Sheriff’s Department is only accepting pills or patches and cannot accept liquids, needles, aerosols, or sharps.
