CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — A startling explosion and ensuing fire disrupted the peace at the University of Illinois Memorial Stadium Tuesday night, injuring one firefighter.
According to fire officials the blaze erupted shortly before 8 p.m. in a maintenance area beneath the horseshoe seating, was promptly attended by Champaign firefighters after an automatic alarm sounded.
Eyewitnesses recounted a loud boom followed by plumes of black smoke. Champaign Fire officials believe the fire’s origin was equipment stored in the maintenance area.
While the fire was rapidly subdued, limiting damage to the maintenance area, one firefighter sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
