URBANA, IL. – The Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office has announced the decision not to pursue charges in the case of a fatal stabbing that occurred in March. 

The incident involved a woman defending herself against a man, resulting in his death.

According to Urbana Police, on March 30, 2023, officers responded to a stabbing call. The victim, identified as Robert J. Cavette, succumbed to his injuries after being stabbed during a domestic dispute. The woman involved had an active order of protection against Cavette.

According to the investigation, the woman claimed self-defense, stating that Cavette was choking her during the altercation. No witnesses were present during the incident. The woman immediately contacted the authorities, provided a statement, and fully cooperated with the investigation.

After reviewing the evidence and police reports, the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office has decided not to press charges against the woman, as there was no indication of criminal intent. The case has been closed without further prosecution.
