Champaign, IL – Early Morning Shooting Leaves One Dead, One Injured

Champaign, IL – A shooting early Sunday morning on the 1100 block of N. Mattis Avenue left one man dead and another injured.

According to Champaign Police, officers responded at 1:54 a.m. to reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they found evidence of a shooting but no witnesses. Shortly after, two victims arrived at a local hospital. The 24-year-old male victim from Rantoul, suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound to the torso, succumbed to his injuries. The 28-year-old male victim, also from Rantoul, sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his leg and remains in stable condition.

The initial investigation indicates that the shooting occurred in the parking lot of a business near the intersection of Mattis and Bradley. Police believe unknown suspects opened fire before fleeing the scene. One vehicle was also damaged.

Champaign Police are canvassing the area for witnesses and surveillance footage. They urge anyone with information to call 217-351-4545 or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477 (TIPS) or 373tips.com. Rewards are offered for tips leading to arrests.
