First drug to treat Alexander disease approved by the FDA after three decades of research at UW–Madison

The FDA has approved Zanvastro, the first disease-modifying treatment for Alexander disease, a rare and often fatal neurological disorder affecting fewer than one in a million people. Developed from more than 30 years of UW–Madison research, the drug targets disease-driving GFAP and stabilized motor function in trials. Its approval offers new hope for patients previously limited to symptom management.
