Fond du Lac, WI – Residents in Fond du Lac County are being warned about an ongoing phone scam in which a caller allegedly impersonates a sheriff& 39;s office captain, threatens victims with arrest and demands payment.
According to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff& 39;s Office, authorities became aware Wednesday of a scam targeting local residents. The caller allegedly claims to be Capt. Chris Randall of the sheriff& 39;s office and tells potential victims they are facing an urgent legal matter.
Authorities said the scammer then allegedly threatens the person with an arrest warrant and provides a fraudulent phone number to call. Victims are instructed to make a payment to avoid being arrested.
The sheriff& 39;s office emphasized that it will never request payment over the telephone.
Residents who receive one of these calls should not provide money, banking information, credit card numbers or other sensitive personal details to the caller.
Instead, authorities are urging anyone contacted by the scammer to block the number and independently contact the Fond du Lac County Sheriff& 39;s Office using its official non emergency line at 920 929 3390.
The warning affects residents across Fond du Lac County and the broader east central Wisconsin area, where similar impersonation scams can use fear and urgency to pressure potential victims into acting before verifying a caller& 39;s identity.
Anyone receiving an unexpected call involving threats of arrest or immediate payment should independently verify the claim with the law enforcement agency supposedly involved rather than using a phone number supplied by the caller.
