Kenosha, WI – A three vehicle crash in Kenosha County early Tuesday left a 46 year old Illinois woman dead and a 19 year old Wisconsin man seriously injured, temporarily closing County Highway C near Wilmot Road.
According to the Kenosha County Sheriff 's Office, deputies and personnel from Bristol Fire and Pleasant Prairie Fire responded to the 21200 block of County Highway C at about 5:21 a.m. Tuesday.
A preliminary investigation indicates a 19 year old Genoa City man was driving a Chevrolet HHR east on Highway C when the vehicle crossed the centerline and sideswiped a westbound vehicle, authorities said. The HHR then collided head on with a westbound Chevrolet Impala driven by a 46 year old woman from Ingleside, Illinois.
Both drivers involved in the head on collision were trapped and had to be extricated by rescue personnel. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said the Genoa City man was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries and was cooperating with investigators.
The driver of the vehicle that was sideswiped was not injured and provided investigators with a witness statement, according to the sheriff's office.
The multi agency Major Crash Assistance Team responded to investigate, along with the Kenosha County Medical Examiner's Office. Authorities were withholding the woman's name Tuesday pending notification of her family.
Sheriff David Zoerner thanked deputies, firefighters and rescue personnel who responded and said investigators were working to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
County Highway C reopened at approximately 10 a.m. Tuesday. The crash remains under investigation.
