A fast-moving winter storm is set to impact Iowa starting Friday afternoon, bringing a quick burst of snow followed by a second round of wintry precipitation overnight into Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, the first wave of snow will drop 1 to 2 inches across north-central and northeast Iowa Friday afternoon, with snowfall rates reaching up to 1 inch per hour. Strong southerly winds gusting up to 40 mph could cause blowing and drifting snow, leading to reduced visibility and hazardous road conditions during the evening commute.
A second round of snow and freezing rain will begin late Friday night and persist through Saturday, affecting central and southern Iowa. Areas south of I-80 can expect ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch before precipitation transitions to snow. Snowfall totals of up to 3 inches are possible, with higher localized amounts. Light snow or flurries may linger into Sunday morning.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Drivers should anticipate slippery roads and reduced visibility. Travelers are encouraged to check Iowa 511 for updated road conditions.
