Lombard, IL – Two Ohio men accused of stealing more than $135,000 worth of jewelry from a Lombard store will remain free pending trial after a judge denied prosecutors’ request to detain them.
Julius Alls, 51, and Demondre Butler, 28, both of Columbus, Ohio, face multiple felony charges, including Theft ($100,000-$500,000), Burglary, and Possession of Burglary Tools. According to DuPage County prosecutors, the men allegedly broke into Rogers & Holland Jewelers at Yorktown Mall on Tuesday night, prying open a security gate with a crowbar and taking $137,205 worth of merchandise.
Authorities said Alls and Butler fled when they spotted a security officer, escaping in a silver Volvo with a towel covering the license plate. Officers stopped the car nearby, arresting both men without incident. Investigators recovered a crowbar, as well as a bag of stolen jewelry discarded along Roosevelt Road.
DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin emphasized the broader impact of retail theft, while Lombard police praised officers’ swift response. Both defendants are scheduled to appear in court on March 10.
Officials remind the public that charges are allegations, and the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
