Memphis, TN – Severe thunderstorms will roll through Memphis on Wednesday, bringing the potential for heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds. The stormy weather could create hazardous travel conditions and possible power outages across the region.
According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms are expected to develop early Wednesday morning and intensify throughout the day. The highest chance of storms will be between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m., with additional showers possible in the afternoon. Winds could gust up to 25 mph, making driving dangerous on I-40, I-55, and I-240. Rainfall totals will likely be under an inch, but localized downpours could lead to brief flooding in low-lying areas.
Storms may continue into Wednesday night before tapering off early Thursday morning. A 40% chance of lingering showers remains on Thursday, but no severe weather is expected. Winds will shift from the south, keeping temperatures mild, with highs reaching 77°F.
By Friday, drier weather returns, with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 61°F. The weekend will bring a warming trend, with Saturday reaching 77°F under partly sunny skies. A slight chance of rain lingers, but overall, conditions will improve.
Residents should prepare for rapidly changing weather by securing outdoor items and monitoring forecasts for any severe weather alerts. Those traveling during peak storm hours should allow extra time and drive cautiously, especially in areas prone to ponding water.
Stay weather-aware by checking local forecasts frequently, and ensure mobile devices are charged in case of power outages. Emergency kits, including flashlights and batteries, should be ready in case of prolonged disruptions.
