Chicago, IL – A Flood Watch is in effect for the Chicago metro area and surrounding counties from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. CST Friday, as heavy rainfall increases the risk of flooding in urban and low-lying areas.
According to the National Weather Service, widespread rain, heavy at times, is expected to move into northern Illinois and northwest Indiana early Friday morning and persist through the afternoon. Rainfall totals could reach up to 1.5 inches, which, combined with frozen ground and river ice, may cause water to pool on roadways, flood underpasses, and push creeks and streams beyond their banks.
The affected areas include Cook, DuPage, Kane, Will, and Kankakee counties in Illinois, as well as Lake and Porter counties in Indiana. Residents should expect flooded streets, poor drainage issues, and potential disruptions to travel.
Officials urge drivers to avoid water-covered roads and underpasses, as even shallow flooding can be dangerous. Those near rivers or streams should closely monitor water levels and be prepared to take action if flooding develops.
