Chicago, IL – Frigid temperatures and hazardous wind chills as low as -30° will persist through Tuesday night, creating dangerous conditions for exposed skin. Residents are urged to avoid extended outdoor exposure, as frostbite can develop within 30 minutes.
According to the National Weather Service, wind chills across the Chicago region are expected to hover between -20° and -30° overnight and remain below zero through Wednesday morning. A cold weather advisory is in effect until 2 p.m. Tuesday for portions of Illinois and northwest Indiana.
Tuesday will bring a high near 3°, though gusty winds up to 25 mph will intensify the cold. Temperatures will slightly improve Wednesday, with a high of 24° forecasted. However, accumulating snow is expected Wednesday afternoon into the evening, which could result in hazardous road conditions. Drivers are encouraged to use extra caution, particularly along major roadways like I-90 and I-55.
Looking ahead, Thursday and Friday will see a gradual warming trend, with highs reaching the mid-20s and partly sunny skies. However, nighttime lows will still dip to the teens, maintaining a chill in the air.
As the bitter cold continues, residents should wear multiple layers, cover exposed skin, and keep emergency kits in vehicles. Those in vulnerable situations are encouraged to use warming centers available throughout the region.
