Eureka, CA – Northern California residents are waking up to a chilly start as a cold weather advisory remains in effect through Wednesday morning. Temperatures are expected to drop into the high 20s across the Humboldt Coast, Mendocino County, and surrounding areas, with frost and dangerous wind chills posing risks to residents.
According to the National Weather Service, wind chill values as low as 28 degrees could lead to frostbite or hypothermia for those exposed to prolonged cold. The advisory affects the Humboldt Coast and interior areas, including Eureka, Arcata, and Ukiah, and is set to expire at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Officials urge residents to bundle up with hats, gloves, and layers, and to limit outdoor activities.
Travelers on highways such as U.S. Route 101 and State Route 299 should exercise caution as frost could create slippery conditions, especially in shaded areas. Residents are advised to protect sensitive plants by covering them or bringing them indoors. Pet owners should ensure their animals have adequate shelter and warmth.
The cold snap is expected to ease by Thursday, with sunny skies and highs reaching the mid-50s. However, overnight lows will continue to hover in the 30s through the weekend. Residents are encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors and use heaters safely to avoid accidents.
