Jackson, MS –Mississippi is bracing for a winter storm that will bring heavy snow and dangerously low temperatures beginning Tuesday. The National Weather Service warns of hazardous travel conditions and prolonged cold across much of the state through Wednesday night.
According to the NWS in Jackson, areas in the central and southern parts of Mississippi could see snow accumulations of 2-4 inches, with the heaviest impact expected south of I-20. Cities like Brookhaven and Natchez are under a significant threat level, while Jackson and Meridian face elevated threats. Power outages are possible due to the storm.
Additionally, an elevated cold threat is forecast statewide, with temperatures plunging below freezing tonight and wind chills reaching dangerous levels. Prolonged exposure could lead to frostbite and hypothermia, with additional risks to exposed pipes.
The NWS advises avoiding travel during the storm, preparing for potential power outages, and ensuring adequate heating. Roads are expected to become snow-covered and icy, especially in areas with higher accumulations.
