Grand Rapids, MI – Lake-effect snow is expected to pile up to 6-12 inches within 25 miles of Lake Michigan by Tuesday, Jan. 21, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Rapids. Gusting winds of up to 25 mph could create snowdrifts and treacherous travel conditions.
The NWS noted that snow accumulations will begin Sunday night and persist through Tuesday evening. Some snow could extend further inland, creating icy and slick roads across the region. Temperatures are forecast to stay in the single digits, with wind chills lowering the frostbite risk to as little as 30 minutes for unprotected skin.
Authorities urge residents to check the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) for updated road conditions and allow extra travel time. Drivers should avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas and equip their vehicles with winter survival kits.
To stay safe in the extreme cold, residents are advised to wear layered clothing, hats, and gloves. Visibility may also be limited in heavier snow bands, so caution is essential.
