Rockford, IL – A cold weather advisory will take effect Sunday morning as subzero temperatures and dangerous wind chills arrive.
According to the National Weather Service, the advisory applies from 3 a.m. to noon Sunday, covering Boone, DeKalb, Kane, McHenry, Ogle, and Winnebago counties. Wind chills are forecast to drop to -20°, creating frostbite risks within 30 minutes of exposure.
The affected areas include Rockford, Elgin, Aurora, and other cities in northern Illinois. Residents should dress warmly, layering clothing and using gloves and hats to minimize exposure. Travel with caution and carry emergency supplies.
The bitter cold is expected to intensify into Sunday night and continue through Tuesday. Temperatures may drop even further during evening hours. Officials advise limiting outdoor activities and ensuring pets are properly sheltered.
Prepare for delays on roads and avoid travel if possible. Frostbite symptoms include numbness and discoloration in extremities. Seek medical help for prolonged exposure symptoms.
