Goodland, KS – Residents in Kansas are preparing for a dangerous cold spell starting Saturday afternoon, lasting through Tuesday morning. Wind chill values are predicted to plummet between -15°F and -30°F, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

According to the National Weather Service, the extreme cold watch affects multiple counties, including Gove, Wallace, and Logan. Frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes when exposed to these temperatures. Experts warn that ruptured water pipes are likely without proper insulation.

Temperatures are expected to drop further each night, with Tuesday morning forecasted to be the coldest. Radiational cooling, combined with light winds, could push wind chills even lower.

Residents are advised to insulate pipes, check on elderly neighbors, and provide warm shelter for outdoor animals. Portable heaters and generators should be used with caution to avoid accidents. Livestock owners are encouraged to provide extra feed and ensure animals have access to unfrozen water.

The National Weather Service recommends monitoring weather updates and avoiding unnecessary outdoor exposure during this extreme cold event.
