North Platte, NE – A cold weather advisory has been issued for Nebraska as temperatures are set to plummet this weekend. The advisory begins Saturday at 6 p.m. CST and extends through noon Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, dangerously cold wind chills ranging from -20 to -30 degrees are expected across central, north-central, and southwest Nebraska. Wind chill values this severe can cause frostbite in as little as 10 minutes, posing a significant risk to anyone outside for prolonged periods.
Officials warn that frostbite and hypothermia are likely without proper precautions. Residents are urged to dress in layers, limit outdoor exposure, and ensure pets have adequate shelter. Those using portable heaters or generators are reminded to follow safety guidelines to prevent fires or carbon monoxide poisoning.
The extreme cold is forecast to linger through Tuesday, with sub-zero wind chills making outdoor activities hazardous. Residents are encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors and family members during this period.
