Grand Forks, ND – Northern Minnesota and eastern North Dakota brace for life-threatening cold as wind chills could drop as low as -50°F.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Cold Weather Advisory starting Friday at 9 p.m., lasting until 6 p.m. Saturday, followed by an Extreme Cold Warning from 6 p.m. Saturday through noon Tuesday. These conditions will affect areas including Kittson, Beltrami, Roseau, and Pennington counties in Minnesota, and Towner and Cavalier counties in North Dakota.
According to the NWS, wind chills of this magnitude can cause frostbite in as little as five minutes. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor exposure, dress in layers, and cover exposed skin. Emergency officials also recommend having a home emergency kit prepared, including flashlights, blankets, and backup heat sources.
The extreme cold will likely disrupt travel and increase demand on heating systems. Those in rural areas are advised to keep extra supplies in vehicles in case of emergencies.
Meteorologists predict temperatures will moderate mid-next week, but caution remains critical through Tuesday.
