Springfield, IL – Snowfall across central Illinois is creating hazardous driving conditions, particularly along the I-74 corridor, where up to two inches of accumulation is expected. Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time and proceed with caution.
According to the National Weather Service, light to moderate snow will taper off by late morning, but slick spots and reduced visibility will remain a concern through the commute. Temperatures will dip into the single digits tonight, with wind chill values as low as -10°F, particularly in areas north of a Springfield-to-Paris line.
The snow and cold have prompted a Winter Weather Advisory for central Illinois, including cities like Bloomington, Champaign, and Peoria. Crews are working to treat major roadways, but untreated surfaces may remain icy. Motorists are advised to reduce speeds, increase following distances, and avoid sudden braking to prevent accidents.
Looking ahead, Wednesday will bring clearer skies but bitterly cold temperatures. Highs are expected to reach only 18°F, with wind chills between -8°F and -2°F. Thursday will see a modest warming trend, with highs near 35°F, while Friday brings a potential for rain as temperatures climb to the mid-40s.
Residents are encouraged to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit outdoor activities during periods of extreme cold. The warming centers in cities across Illinois remain open for those in need.
