Newport, NC – Residents across eastern North Carolina should prepare for a sharp drop in temperatures this week as a cold front grips the region. Daytime highs will linger in the low 40s, with wind chills dipping into the teens and 20s during the mornings.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, sunny skies will dominate through Thursday. However, colder air will lead to overnight lows in the low 20s through midweek. A significant shift is expected Friday night, with increasing chances for rain and a wintry mix along major routes like Highway 70 and other local roadways.

Wednesday will bring sunny skies with a high of 43°F, while Thursday cools slightly to 37°F. Overnight lows will stay consistently frigid at 22°F both nights. Friday’s high reaches 41°F, but showers are likely to begin late, with rain potentially transitioning to sleet or freezing rain by early Saturday morning.

Drivers should exercise caution, particularly on bridges and overpasses, as icy conditions could develop. Officials advise stocking up on winter essentials ahead of the potential wintry mix. Showers will likely taper off by Saturday afternoon, but road conditions may remain hazardous.

Looking ahead, Sunday and Monday appear clear, with highs returning to the mid-40s, offering a break from the wintry conditions.
