Blacksburg, VA – Virginia is gearing up for a wintry weekend, with the National Weather Service (NWS) predicting a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain beginning Sunday night and lasting into Monday. Commuters are warned that icy conditions could make Monday morning travel hazardous.

According to the NWS Blacksburg office, a wintry mix is expected to move in Sunday evening after 10 p.m. Areas across southwest Virginia and central Virginia could see snow accumulation exceeding 2 inches and ice accumulation greater than 0.1 inches. Precipitation will transition to freezing rain overnight, increasing the risk of slick roads and power outages.

Today’s forecast includes a Wind Advisory in effect from 4 p.m. to 7 a.m. Saturday, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph. This advisory impacts parts of I-81 and other major roadways. Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects and drive with caution, especially high-profile vehicles.

Saturday will bring calmer but frigid weather, with sunny skies and highs near 28°F. However, another round of snow and rain arrives late Sunday, intensifying into a wintry mix before dawn Monday. This system will bring treacherous conditions along roads like Route 460 and I-81.

Looking ahead to Tuesday, skies will clear, but temperatures will remain cold, with highs only reaching 28°F.

Residents should monitor weather updates through the weekend and prepare for possible power outages and challenging driving conditions.
