Buffalo, NY – Residents of western New York should prepare for a wet and windy weekend as heavy rain and lake effect snow are forecast to impact the region starting Saturday. Those traveling post-Christmas may face hazardous road conditions due to rain, patchy fog, and gusty winds.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, rain is expected to begin late Friday night, continuing through Saturday, with a high near 55 degrees. Winds could gust as high as 48 mph Saturday night, making driving conditions challenging. Rain showers will persist into Sunday, with a slight drop in temperatures to the mid-50s.
As temperatures fall early next week, lake effect snow is likely to develop east of the Great Lakes, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday. Areas prone to lake effect snow could see accumulating snowfall, but uncertainty remains regarding the heaviest amounts.
Drivers should exercise caution on major routes like Interstate 90, as visibility may be reduced due to fog and heavy rain on Saturday night. Residents are advised to secure outdoor decorations and holiday items to prevent wind damage and to monitor local weather updates for changes in conditions.
Looking ahead, temperatures will trend below normal as we transition into January, with highs in the mid-40s on Monday and Tuesday. Cooler air will dominate later in the week, increasing the potential for snow.
Stay tuned to the latest weather updates and prepare for a wintry start to the New Year.
